@@itsDhiran the engines themselves are moving, and if you have dual engines like the engines and have 3D(they can go up and to the side, 2d thrust vectoring is like the raptors) thrust vectoring you can control pitch roll and yaw, without control surfaces. This allows the plane to be able to control past its stalling point otherwise known as super maneuverability. US has actually developed this technology before the USSR did I mean look at the x-31 and the f/a-18 Harv.

@@KALKAL_ISYU for you to pull a cobra you are already defensive (getting chased), which mean you are dead anyway. So what you want is to force him to overshoot and reset the fight, which means neither both is on one's six. And if you failed to keep your nose and speed onto your enemy, your enemy already overshot thus the fight got reset, or even having the advantage on your side (even better if you have missiles). No maneuvers can bleed speed as quick as Cobra, which means it's a guaranteed 100% overshoot if you don't do it miles away from your bandit.

Believe it or not, they did a lot of research and consulted real-life Top Gun pilots, when designing the dog fights in the movie.
The maneuvers that Maverick is using in the Tomcat, during the dog fight against the Su-57, are based on suggestions of real life pilots on how they would try to fight a 5th gen jet.
People say: "There´s no way an older jet like the Tomcat could defeat a modern Su-57...." which is true on paper, but they ignore that actual dog fighting hasn´t been done in decades and also that the experience of a pilot plays a big part in this.
The movie actually adresses this, that nobody has done a proper dog fight in ages and therefore lack the expertise for it.

@@Daniel-jg8ff ...but that was a fairly different manoeuvre. The one shown by the SU-35 in this clip makes the aircraft come to an almost complete standstill, and lose all of its airspeed and hence its ability to take evasive action for several seconds. It’s an aerobatic display and nothing else. The one used by Draken pilots (and popularised by the Su-27 cobra manoeuvre later on) means the aircraft retains a significant airspeed and and can therefore still manoeuvre both offensively and defensively. Two different scenarios really.

It's too dangerous for american planes to do the bell maneuver. They simply cost too much. We can do it, but the consequences are too severe.

This manuever, also used by the pilot in the enemy SU-57 in Top Gun Maverick, is the Kvouchur's Bell Manuver, a manuver where the aircraft pitches up almost vertically while braking and following the movement of its tail, to slow down a ton in a short amount of time to let the enemy pass by.

This maneuver is called the kvochur bell maneuver. Top gun maverick also did the maneuver. But this maneuver can be bad at some times. 1 you are left vulnerable without speed. 2 the enemy can easily shoot you down. But there are some good things about this maneuver. 1 you can dodge missiles with flares or without flares. 2 you can shock the enemy pilot to scare them. 3 if you are in a dog fight, you can use this maneuver to get behind the enemy pilot.

If the AOA was so high even at the end of the manuever, does that mean at the end the jet is being held up entirely by thrust, no lift?

  • @Terminus316

These are amazing aerobatic maneuvers the only problem is have with the use of them in combat sequences of movies video games etc is that the flight conditions required to execute such a maneuver are such that you will be quite the easy target for any half way competent adversary, and I’m talking guns only not to even delve into the capabilities of aams. Still badass though
